A leaking waterline is to blame for a large sink hole that formed in the middle of Roseboro’s Main Street earlier this week, town officials acknowledged.

The waterline, located near Roseboro’s town park, services the town’s train depot, noted town clerk Nancy Lindsay on Wednesday following a conversation she had the same day with Sandie Monroe, a member of Roseboro’s public works team. According to Lindsay and Monroe, Roseboro’s public works director David Phillips first found out about the sinkhole Sunday night.

“He notified the Department of Transportation immediately and they came out to place safety cones and ‘Road Closed’ signs around the area,” Lindsay reported, adding that local business Sandy’s Hauling and Backhoe Services began the needed repair work early Monday morning.

Since Monday workers have been busy “digging out the line, locating the water leak, repairing the water leak and building the roadway back up for the paving crew,” she explained, adding that town officials are planning on the work being completed by the end of the day today, just in time for the Roseboro Christmas Parade this Friday night which is set to start at 7 p.m. on Board Street and then travel down Main Street as usual.

“We are not anticipating this causing any problems for the Christmas parade,” said Lindsay, “but we have been discussing other routing options if needed.”
