A not so new face has returned to boost the furniture business in Newton Grove, and Jason Reeves is finding himself in the midst of a homecoming and grand opening of the Carolina Furniture Factory Outlet after making a large number of improvements to the building over the last year.
With a grand opening coming Feb. 1, the culminating moment of homecoming for Reeves is quickly approaching, and he said that he is glad to have this great opportunity.
After all the cleaning, painting, selling and restocking, he said he is close to having the store, located on U.S. 701 just outside the town limits, where he wants it for now, with new lines of inventory and merchandise with better quality and pricing.
After graduating from high school, Reeves studied journalism at Radford University and ended up working for newspapers for 10 years. He got the itch for a change while working for a daily newspaper that switched to a weekly.
He said his friend, Adam Resnick, wanted to go on a cruise and the pair ended up talking about work on the way down to Florida. It wasn’t long before the topic turned to the booming furniture business in North Carolina. Adam told him that if he could run a paper, he could run a furniture store, words that began to convince him to try something new. His foray into the NC furniture business, Reeves said, was that big change.
It was then that he found himself coming to what was then the High Point Furniture Outlet in Newton Grove. Some 10 years later he has found himself in the same building again, but this time the building houses his new business venture.
He worked with the Resnick family for a few years and he became a partner in one of their ventures in the Triangle called Furniture 4 Le$$. After they closed shop in 2011 , Reeves said he thought he would not be going back in the furniture business. It didn’t take long, however, for him to realize that he wanted to get back into it. His return led to management and consulting opportunities, and it wasn’t long before he was offered a shot at the Newton Grove location.
Adam Resnick’s dad, Larry Resnick, had a slew of furniture stores in Virginia and North Carolina, and around this time the home base for their operations was relocated from Virginia to North Carolina, said Reeves.
“They needed more people as they grew, and they convinced me to come down (from Virginia) to North Carolina,” he added.
“This has been a great opportunity,” he continued. Even with the changes in the dynamics of the furniture business, he said he sees great growth potential and he feels that this is an opportunity he didn’t want to miss.
For Reeves, coming back to North Carolina has been a reconciliation of sorts, returning to what he so often missed. The furniture business has become a part of him, he attested.
“I grew up in a rural area,” said Reeves in an interview Monday at Carolina Furniture Factory Outlet in Newton Grove. “I grew up on a a farm in a small town much like Newton Grove. I can’t say we had a circle but all these fence posts and fields look very familiar.”
He’s excited about the opportunities that this new business venture offers him, and he stressed, the community as well.
For 60 days he will have his grand opening sale, with the hope that customers will come to see the new merchandise that he and his team have carefully selected.
“We have diversified a lot because of the economy,” said Reeves, “particularly into wicker and rattan furniture. We also have the mattress outlet, with 200 to 300 mattresses in stock.”
His store manager is Juan Juanchi and his warehouse manager is Samuel Juanchi. Reeves said they have both been invaluable. With a small staff, which Reeves describes as a team of special people who love their jobs, he said he is able to take care of everyone at his business. He said that all three of them that run the Carolina Furniture Factory Outlet keep a tight ship, and they have all been in the business for a long time. Reeves credits the Resnick family, and recently Larry Lee, as being some incredible help in making his homecoming happen.
