A 44-year-old Hope Mills man was arrested in late January for a December break-in on Union Grove Church Road where thousands of dollars in property was taken.

Because of an ongoing investigation, the Sheriff’s Department released the information this week.

Robert Eugene Barnes, 44, of 5144 Goshawk Drive, Hope Mills, now faces one felony count of burglary and one felony count of larceny.

Stolen during the break-in was assorted bedroom accessories, kitchen appliances, kitchen furniture, coolers, a living room and den set, three entertainment stands, electronic devices, jewelry, clothing, Christmas decorations, tools and alcoholic beverages.

According to Sheriff’s Cpl. Marcus Smith, detectives were able to make an arrest after an investigation that began with them contacting the financial institution charged with placing the property in foreclosure.

“We were able to get information from the bank about the contract workers who were at the property doing things like winterizing and getting it ready for sale. From those interviews we were able to obtain a confession,” Smith said.

Barnes was jailed under a $6,000 bond but has since been released.
