Sheriff’s probe links man to larcenies

A man reportedly hired to do odd jobs for local residents has now been charged with robbing them.

Sampson County Sheriff’s reports show that Jeffery A. Jones, 41, of 87 Old Drag Strip Road, Roseboro, was taken into custody Thursday and charged with myriad offenses related to two larcenies, one that occurred on Dec. 18 and the other on New Year’s Day.

Jones is charged with two counts larceny of a motor vehicle, two counts possession of a stolen vehicle, both felonies, and misdemeanor counts of larceny and possession of stolen goods in connection with a Dec. 18, 2013 theft on Hobbton Highway where over $7,000 worth of merchandise, that included two vehicles and a chain saw.

In addition, he faces felony counts of breaking and entering, larceny of a firearm, possession/concealing weapons and possession of a firearm by a felon in connection with the Jan. 1 theft of a shotgun valued at $500 from a Tram Road residence.

According to Sheriff’s Cpl. Marcus Smith, an investigation into the incidents led officers to suspect Jones who had been hired to do “odds and ends” for the victims.

No further details were available about the cases.

Jones was taken into custody around 11:30 a.m. Feb. 27 and placed under a $15,000 bond for the Jan. 1 incident and an additional $7,500 bond for the December larcenies.

He is expected to make his first appearance in Sampson District Court on those charges March 14.
