GARLAND – During a Thursday evening prayer vigil, community members showed support to the family members of six Garland residents who lost their lives during a recent fire.
The vigil at Rotary Park featured many speakers who made remarks about the Saturday morning tragedy on Gibbs Road. Victims of the fire were Laura Newkirk, Johnny Kent Newkirk, James Earl “Possum” Wilson, Anita Robinson, Tashyia Robinson and Andre Smith.
On behalf of the Garland Board of Commissioners, Mayor Winifred Murphy acknowledged their loved ones during the event.
“It’s been hard on everyone, but it’s been so much harder on you,” Murphy said. “You’re making an effort to come to Garland today, so we sincerely thank you.”
During the benediction, the Rev. Timothy Register prayed and thanked God for the memories of the people who once lived amongst them.
“We pray Lord, that our lives may be different because we’ve known them,” Register said. “We pray Lord that in the days ahead that you not only support these family members, but each other.”
He also prayed that people strive every day to make someone’s road a little easier to travel.
“We know Lord, when we reach to help others, we are just like you,” Register said. “Help us to be your servant. Bless us now as we go from this place, cover us with your love and protection.”
Register was one of several pastors who said prayers for the six victims.
