A very skillful and experienced carpenter by the name of Johnny Melvin once told me that in every building there is a cornerstone. He said, “the cornerstone is the starting point for the foundation of the building, and everything else pertaining to the construction of the building has to follow that corner stone or corner block. If not, the building will eventually collapse or at the least, require major repairs sometime down the road.”
I’ve noticed that most of our church buildings have a designated spot on the outside of their buildings as the “cornerstone.” Typically, there are the names of the trustees, or deacons, or founders, engraved in this area to honor or recognize their contributions to the construction of the church building.
The Bible clearly says Jesus Christ is the cornerstone of the church. In fact, it is stated nine different times in the Bible, with my favorite being that of Ephesians 2:20-21, which says, “And are built upon the foundations of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; in whom all the building fitly framed together growth unto a holy temple in the Lord.”
Ephesians 2:20-21 clearly indicates the church is built upon the foundations of the apostles and prophets. They build the foundation based upon Jesus Christ being the starting point, i.e., the cornerstone. Everything that goes into the building of the foundation has to line up with the corner stone, Jesus Christ. This is true today for the church and as the carpenter Johnny Melvin said above, it is also true of every constructed building.
The construction of any building is tightly framed and fitted if the foundation is lined up with the cornerstone. Every local church is tightly framed and fitted together if the foundation is lined up with the cornerstone named Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ as the cornerstone gave specific instructions as to how the foundation of His church is to be constructed. Any deviation from His instructions results in a damaged building that if not corrected, will cause the building to eventually collapse. We have all the instructions that are needed contained in the Word of God but we have deviated from those instructions by adding additional instructions from man.
The world is in a mess because our churches are in a mess. And our churches are in a mess because the cornerstone and the foundation are not lining up together. I believe God is saying to us the same thing He once said in Job 28:4-6 — “Where were you when I laid the foundations….who determined the measurements…who stretched out the line…where is the foundation laid…who laid the cornerstone.”
Before judgment begins at the house of God, perhaps it would be a good idea for us to add the name of “Jesus Christ” to our precious little cornerstones on the side of our precious buildings.
