Clinton traveled to Spivey’s Corner to face the undefeated Midway Raiders Friday evening in their first regular season meeting ever. Clinton won a great game 21-18.

Clinton struck first in the opening quarter, as they scored on their third drive on a 43 yard run from Silas Herring. Clinton led 7-0 after the first quarter.

The Dark Horse defense would then put points on the board as Kenneth Ford intercepted Taylor Calcutt’s pass and returned it 15 yards for a touchdown.

Midway did a good job of marching the ball down the field at the end of the second quarter, and finally got on the board with a 23 yard field goal by Junior Barajas at the end of the first half. Clinton led 14-3 at halftime.

The Midway defense was gritty all night, and held Clinton on their first possession of the second half. Midway then cut the lead to 4 on a Cody Baker touchdown run from 2 yards out.

Kris Royal, who had a fantastic game overall, returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown for Clinton. This completely took the air out of the Raider crowd, but only for a minute. On the very next kickoff, Troy Spell of Midway returned it 92 yards down to the 7 yard line. Cody Baker would score from there, and after Taylor Calcutt found Andre Sankey on the 2-point conversion attempt, the lead was only 3 for Clinton, 21-18.

Clinton drove down the field when Jordan Thompson of Midway intercepted the ball and returned it deep into Dark Horse territory, only to be called back to the Midway 9 yard line after a clipping penalty.

The Raiders could never move the ball from there, and lost their first game of the year to a very talented Clinton squad.

Coach Bob Lewis of Clinton and Coach Tommy Sloan of Midway began their coaching career together at Clinton over 40 years ago. Tonight, they were part of a game that did not let the very large crowd down.

“We are very glad to get out of here with a win. Our offense did not play too great, I thought our defense did,” commented Coach Lewis on his team’s 4th win of the year.

Coach Sloan stated that his Raiders fought hard, but had too many little mistakes to win the game. He continued to say how well he thought his defense played. They only allowed one touchdown, as the special teams and offense each allowed one as well.

Stat leaders for Clinton were Silas Herring with 81 yards on 12 carries, Chandler Whitfield with 1 catch for 15 yards, and Jonathan Wright going 3-4 through the air for 35 yards and an interception.

For Midway, Troy Spell had 88 yards on 7 carries, and 200 all purpose yards, Andre Sankey had 3 catches for 55 yards, Taylor Calcutt was 7-17 through the air with 93 yards and 2 interceptions, and Luke Clark had 10 tackles.

Clinton improves to 4-2 on the season, and Midway falls to 6-1. It won’t get any easier for the Raiders next week, as they travel to Wallace to take on the Bulldogs. Clinton will play at Union.
