Union traveled to Pender Friday evening under a chilly night sky to take on the struggling Patriots. Union, in desperate need of a win of their own, won an ugly, sloppy game 28-6.

After each team punted on their first possessions, Union scored on their second possession with a 50 yard run by Dezmond Faison.

Pender’s highlight of the first half came on a 42 yard punt-gone-wrong run from their own end zone on a 4th and 37 situation. However, Pender could not score, and Union led 7-0 at the break.

Dezmond Faison then took the game over on both sides of the football in the second half. Faison had touchdown runs of 20, 18, and 30 yards in the second half, and recovered 3 fumbles. Union as a team played much better defensively in the second half, forcing 6 fumbles and recovering 5. Jahmel Land and Chris Rodriguez recovered the two fumbles that Faison did not pick up.

Union allowed one Pender touchdown, coming on a 30 yard touchdown run up the middle.

Union was too talented for the Patriots, which resulted in a 28-6 win

Spartan Head Coach Doug Burley was pleased with his team’s third win of the year, saying that his defense played very well the entire game, and his offense really picked things up in the second half.

Chris Nash and Dustin Alphin, who also got the start at quarterback led the Spartans in tackles with 7 tackles a piece.

Of course it was Dezmond Faison leading the Spartan attack offensively. The senior had 218 yards on 15 carries, and over 250 all purpose yards.

Union improves to 3-6 on the season, and will host East Bladen next week. East Bladen will be coming off of their 36-28 upset of the Wallace Rose-Hill Bulldogs Friday evening.
