Midway welcomed the Heide Trask Titans to Spivey’s Corner Friday night as the Raiders celebrated homecoming. The Raiders, after close losses to Clinton and Wallace-Rose Hill the 2 previous weeks, scored a lopsided 51-9 win over the Titans.

The Titans took the opening kickoff and promptly went 3 and out. The Raiders started their possession on the 50. On the first play from scrimmage Taylor Calcutt found Troy Spell for a 50 yard touchdown pass. Calcutt then ran for the 2 point conversion, giving the Raiders an 8-0 lead with 9:53 left in the first period.

Trask was unable to move the ball again and the Raiders took over on downs at the Trask 43. On the second play, Cody Baker ran 35 yards for pay dirt. Baltazar Barajas kicked the extra point and the home team led 15-0 at the 6:33 mark of the quarter.

After a Titan punt, Baker ran back to the 21 yard line. Moments later Calcutt scampered 14 yards for another Raider touchdown. Calcutt then passed to Tyler Pope for the 2 point conversion and a 23-0 lead with 3:30 to go in the opening frame.

Trask held possession as the second quarter began. On first and 10 from the Midway 22, the Raiders’ Luke Clark recovered a Titan fumble and hustled toward the end zone. A Raider penalty placed the ball on the Trask 27. A couple of plays later with 8:31 left in the half, Troy Spell scored from 2 yards out. The Barajas PAT made it 30-0.

The Raiders would get 1 more score before intermission. Calcutt connected with Pope for a 26 yard touchdown pass with 2:01 to play. Barajas nailed the PAT to give Midway a 37-0 lead, which would be the half time score.

During intermission, senior Deanna Florido was named 2014 Homecoming Queen.

The Raiders got 7 more points on their first possession of the second half. With 10:34 to play in the 3rd period, Jeremy Robinson scored from 25 yards out. Another Barajas PAT made it 44-0.

The Titans got on the scoreboard at the 2:18 mark of the 3rd period. Matthew Sherman nailed a 33 yard field goal to make it 44-3.

In the final frame, Robinson hit pay dirt again from 14 yards out. The Raiders led 51-3 with 8:05 to go.

With 2:32 left, Titan quarterback DaShaun Walker found Dakota McFadden for a 10 yard touchdown pass. The PAT failed and 51-9 would be the final score.

“We had a good week of practice,” attested Raider running back Jeremy Robinson. “We lost 2 players, Cameron Godwin and Chris Tart and we just had to go and do it for them and the fans. We played excellent and when you play good football, that’s what happens.”

For the Raiders on offense, Calcutt was 6-6 in passing for a total of 136 yards. Baker picked up 85 yards on the ground with 3 carries, while Robinson ran 12 times for 82 yards.

Justin Thompson and Collin Warren had 6 tackles each to lead the defense.

The Raiders improve to 7-2 overall and 3-2 in Four County Conference play. The Titans fall to 0-9. Midway will travel to West Bladen next week.

“We played pretty well all the way around,” asserted Raider head coach Tommy Sloan. “We sort of had our way after the first play on offense. The defense played decent. It was a good win. We’ve got 7 behind us and 2 more to go.”
