It was a middle grades academy volleyball frenzy at the Mintz Christian Academy gym when Community Baptist, New Life Christian, Spirit of Life, and Mintz academies went head-to-head in volleyball action on Monday.
In the first round, MCA defeated Community Baptist 2-0; and Spirit of Life defeated New Life 2-0.
In the consolation round, Community Baptist brought down New Life in 2 of 3 sets. NLCA won the first set 26-24, but CBA came back strong, 25-21, 25-18.
For the championship, the Lady Lions defeated Spirit of Life in 3 sets: 25-9, 25-7, 25-15.
An All-Tournament team was selected by the opposing coaches and consisted of: MCA: Hanna Horn, Brianna Wheeler, Sydney Norris; SOLCA: Brooke Dienhart Brooke Stewart; CBA: Mackinzi Brisson; NLCA: Tori Hobbs.
MCA Coach Dan Heinz said all the matches were exciting to watch.
“All of the schools can be very proud of their girls. Each team brought their best effort tonight and there was a lot of excitement in the gym. The consolation round between New Life and Community Baptist was a great match,” he stated.
“I am very proud of our MCA girls. They have worked very hard this season and it showed tonight. We were passing, setting and attacking, and that is the way the game is supposed to be played,” he added.
MCA beats RSMS
The Lady Lions ended their season on a high note, defeating Roseboro-Salemburg Middle School in 3 straight sets on Tuesday: 25-10, MCA 25-22, MCA 25-12.
“Our girls played very well tonight against a talented RSMS team. They have several strong servers led by Kristlen Bullard who can really bring it,” Coach Heinz said.
Leading scorers for the Lions were Brianna Wheeler with 18 points and Savannah Fann with 13 points.
MCA finished their first volleyball season with an astonishing 12-2 record and Coach Heinz, who is also MCA’s athletic director, is very proud of that fact and with the way his team has improved seemingly from game to game.
“As a coach it is exciting to see how our girls have developed since day one. They can run an offense now and understand positioning. Sydney Norris is a gifted outside hitter, our two middles Hanna Horn and Erynn Sessoms can also put it down. I have coached for many years and had lots of wonderful teams, and this team has been one of the best coaching experiences I have ever had. These girls are a joy to coach,” asserted Heinz.
