The Hobbton Wildcats advanced to the second round of the state soccer play-offs Wednesday night benching the Union Spartans, 5-3.
Scoring for the Wildcats were Eber Gomez with 4 goals and Daniel Villagomez with 1 goal. Union scored with at the 23:54 mark on a kick by Cesar Cardenas.
For the Spartans, Cesar Cardenas found the back of the net twice and Elias Gonzalez scored 1 goal.
Union head coach David Ameen was sorry to see the season end for them in this first round, but proud of the way his team played.
“Even though we never got the lead from Hobbton, we never quit. Every time the Wildcats scored, my guys did a great job of staying focused and not panicking. I was also proud of the way they managed to keep their composure for the most part,” Coach Ameen stated.
Seven of his starters are seniors and Ameen said he has coached them since they were sophomores.
“I have to say that all seven of them are some of the finest young men I’ve ever worked with. During my first year at Union they were all sophomores and every one of them always gave me 110%. They will be sorely missed,” he added.
The Wildcats will travel to Granville Central, who is No. 1 in their conference with a 17-3-1 record, for round two on Saturday. Time to be announced.
The Wildcats are 12-5-2. Union ended their season 11-6-2.
