The North Duplin Rebel home team scored pretty much at will against the Hobbton Wildcats in Friday night’s high school football action. The final was 35-13, North Duplin.
Wildcat coach Jeff Byrd said, “We struggled moving the ball. I though we played pretty good defense and then we threw that pick which they ran back and went up 14-0. We just don’t block well up front. We miss a lot of blocks. Our kids kept their heads in there. Hats off to North Duplin, they have a good football team.”
The Rebels got off to a bad start losing a fumble on the first series of the game after the kick off return went to the Wildcat 10-yard line. Johnnie Knowles grabbed the loose ball at the Wildcat 4-yard line. However, the Wildcats didn’t get much further than that and kicked it away.
The Rebels turned that around going 43 yards for the score. Emiliano Mora scored on a 25-yard run. Antonio Jaimes kicked the point after for a 7-0 lead at the 9:33 mark in the first quarter.
The Wildcat offense went three-and-out again kicking the ball away starting the Rebels at their own 35-yard line. However, the Rebels didn’t do any better and had to punt on the first play of the second quarter.
The Rebels picked off a Logan Langston pass and returned the ball to the 6-yard line before being stopped. With 10:12 left in the second, Mora scored again on a 2-yard run. Jaimes’ point after kick gave the Rebels a 14-0 lead.
The Wildcat offense sputtered to a stop on the next possession. North Duplin turned the ball around at the 40-yard line. James Britt hooked up with J P Payton on a 28-yard pass play to got up 20-0. Jaimes centered the point after kick for a 21-0 lead which they held at the half.
The Wildcats had first chance after the break but fumbled the kick off. North Duplin recovered at the Hobbton 38-yard line. With 9:11 left it the third quarter, the Rebels scored again on 16-yard run by Daron Goodman. Jesse Garcia kicked the point after for a 28-0 lead.
The Wildcats tried to convert a fourth down on the next series when Langston was sacked well behind the line of scrimmage and the Rebels took over again on the Wildcat 30-yard line. Garcia’s point after kick made it 35-0 late in the third quarter.
The Rebels put the subs in during the fourth quarter and the Wildcats were able to generate some offense. With 9:39 left in the game, Langston scored on a 1-yard run after Raequan Bryant took off on a 40-yard scamper to the 6-yard line. The point after failed on a bad snap from center.
The Wildcats picked up another Rebel fumble late in the game. With 40 seconds left, Ellis Wilson scored on a 30-yard run. Malik Parker kicked the point after for a 35-13 finish.
The 1-9 Wildcats will finish the regular season next week at home hosting cross-county rival, Lakewood, for senior night. Game time is 7:30.
