Spartans fall to Eagles in the rain

Union’s varsity football team held their senior night Friday night against 2A East Bladen in conference competition. The Eagles took away the win with a final score of 36-6.
Within the first 5 minutes of the game the revved up Spartans crossed the goal line for the first score of the night, but were unable to add the PAT. They led 6-0 for the first quarter.
The Eagles made a few adjustments and came back strong in the 2nd quarter, scoring 3 times: at the 11 minute mark; the 7 minute mark; and with 3 minutes left in the first half.
At intermission, the score was 6-24.
In the 3rd the Eagles gained a fourth TD and put 6 more points on the board. The point after attempt failed.
East Bladen crossed into the end zone one last time in the fourth quarter to make the final score 6-36.
Leading rusher for the Spartans was Dezmond Faison with 82 yards in 18 carries. Shyquan Brunson had 6 carries for 22 yards.
In the air, Faison attempted 4 passes with 1 completion for 38 yards. Brunson caught that 38 yard pass.
Dustin Alphin led the defense with 14 tackles. Chris Nash was right behind with 11.5 tackles; and Tamah Chestnutt, with 6.5 tackles.
Spartan head coach Doug Burley was disappointed with the loss, but believes more practice and hard work will make the team better.
“We lost tonight, and we just need to work on it and get better,” he said.
Assistant Coach Bryant Register agreed and called this a “transitional year.” He said the coaches are asking a lot of some of the younger players, plus with it being a split 1A-2A conference this year and Union being a 1A school, they are facing tougher competition on a regular basis.
The upside to this is that Union is No. 2 in the 1A division of the Four County Conference, after defeating Pender and Trask.
The Spartans’ record is now 3-7, and they travel to Midway next Friday to face the Raiders on their senior night.
