Girls give thumping to teams, maintain perfect record

The Lady Leopards maintained their perfect record this season with a sound win over Whiteville Wednesday, 52-30, and a solid thumping of county rival Union on Tuesday, winning that game 41-18.
Lakewood head coach Lofton Kerr said he was happy with the wins, but did not believe his team was playing up to their potential.
“I’m still not pleased with the way we are playing. I know we can play a lot better. It seems like we’re playing to the level of our competition and I don’t like that. The girls just don’t seem to be comfortable with each other and I don’t understand it,” he declared.
“We’re a young team, though, and I guess this is a rebuilding time,” he added.
Against the Wolfpack, the Leopards had a 7-point lead going into the final quarter, but managed to pull away with a 20-6 run in the final 8 minutes.
Scoring was fairly even across the team, with Kiara Rich and Rashyda Parker each contributing 11 points. Rich sank 3 3-pointers, pulled down 6 rebounds, and stole the ball 6 times. Parker, who is nursing an injured ankle, had 5 rebounds.
Also contributing for the Leopards was Justina Henry with 9 points; Briana Evans, 8 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals; Jada Moore, 7 points and 6 rebounds; Daja Owens, 4 points; Bianca Boone, 2 points; and Kiara Henry had 1 steal.
Lakewood stats against Union showed Evans as the leading scorer in the game with 12 points and 5 rebounds. Rich was close behind with 9 points and 8 rebounds; Parker, 6 and 6; Henry, 5 and 4; Alexis Williams, 4 points; Owens, 2 and 3; Aleah Parker, 1 and 3; Boone, 2 and 1 ; Jada Moore, 4 rebounds.
For the Spartans, Mia Bronson had 7 points; T. Chestnutt, 6; S. Walker, 4; and D. Robinson, 1 point.
The Leopards will host down the road rival 2A Clinton Friday and the Spartans will travel to cross-county rival Hobbton. Game times are at 6 p.m. The Spartans will have a chance to avenge their loss when they travel to Leopard Country next Tuesday.
