The Leopards varsity boys hosted Spring Creek on Tuesday and fought hard to get the 40-30 win conference.

The Leopards kept their heads up despite an evenly matched Spring Creek team and managed to stay ahead for most of the game.

At the end of the first quarter, it was tied, 14-14, but a few adjustments going into the next 8 minutes gave Lakewood the edge they needed.

It seemed that something clicked inside of the Leopards, and they became a fence of defense against Spring Creek and this was the key. It was neck and neck until the end as Lakewood pulled through and stayed ahead to get their first conference win.

“This game was a little sluggish to begin with. Thank God we did what we needed to do to win. Our kids played smart to finish out strong. We have a lot of work to do, but we’ll take the win,” head coach Sylvester Pittman said.

Shyheim Rich was top scorer for the Leopards with 13 points. Michael Smith had 11 points; Mike Graham, 6; Jabriel Cooper, 5; Willie Herring, 4; and Maurice Boone, 1 point.

Lakewood is now 1-0 in conference, and 3-5 overall. The Leopards well play Thursday at North Duplin.
