The Lady Leopards took on the East Bladen Eagles Saturday night in the championship game of the Nathan Gay Basketball Tournament. Although it was a close game, the Leopards fell to the Eagles, who took home the gold.

East Bladen was named the 2013 Nathan Gay Holiday Classic Girls Champions, and Lakewood went home first runner up in the tournament.

The Eagles came out hot in the first quarter, and racked up 18 points over Lakewood’s 5 points. In the second, the Leopards began to find the basket more frequently, and brought the total to 17-28 at halftime.

The game stayed tight in the third, with East Bladen hanging on to their lead with a score of 38-25 as we entered the fourth. A big East Bladen fourth quarter really suppressed Lakewood, and ended the game with a final score of 59-36.

Head Coach for the Leopards, Coach Lofton Kerr, said, “I wasn’t very pleased with how we played. I thought we started off slow, but at halftime we were still in the game. It seemed like we could never find the goal at some points. But we did get second place, and as a young team this is their first trophy so I’m proud of that. We’ve just got to work on some things and start putting the ball in the hoop.”

Leading the scoring for the Leopards was Kiara Rich with 12 points, Briana Evans with 7 points, Rashyda Parker with 6 points.

Lakewood will host Rosewood Friday, January 3rd, with the girls’ game beginning at 6 p.m.

In the final game of the night, Lakewood and Triton battled it out for the title of 2013 Nathan Gay Champions. The game was very back and forth throughout, but Triton eventually edged ahead of Lakewood for the win, 63-54.

The first quarter showed signs of an even match, with Lakewood scoring 13 points and Triton scoring 10. Lakewood held on to their small lead, and went to the locker room at halftime with a score of 25-24.

In the third, Triton was able to squeak ahead of the Leopards, and entered the fourth quarter with a one point lead, 43-42. The fourth was a real nail-biter, and had everyone on the edge of their seats as the teams went back and forth. Although they battled hard, Lakewood had to settle for second place in the tournament.

Triton took home the title of 2013 Nathan Gay Holiday Classic Boys Champions with a win over the Leopards, 63-54.

Leading scorers for Lakewood were Deshaun Wilson with 22 points, Willie Herring with 17 points, Michael Smith with 7 points.

The Leopards will take on Rosewood Friday, January 3rd at Lakewood High School.
