The Spartans went toe to toe with the Eagles at Union High School Thursday night. This conference game proved to be no easy task for the Spartans, who were overcome by the Eagles, 63-37.
East Bladen took a quick lead in the first quarter, jumping out 17-9. In the second, the Spartans began finding the basket more frequently, and added 12 points to their end of the scoreboard. However, the Eagles continued to drive past the Spartan defense, and scored 17 points of their own. At halftime, the Eagles still held the lead, 34-21. The two teams came out hustling in the third, bringing the score to 44-28 in Eagle favor at the sound of the buzzer. The Spartans struggled on both ends of the court in the fourth, leading to an Eagle victory, 63-37.
Leading the scoring for Union was Brandon Lovette with 18 points, Brandon Johnson with 5 points, Christian Boykin with 3 points, Cameron Carter with 3 points.
Tim Pope, Head Coach for the Spartans, said, “Our effort tonight was good, the ballgame was a lot closer than the last time we played the Eagles. It was a twelve point ballgame with six minutes to go. Brandon Lovette had a huge game tonight with 18 points. We continue to work hard, and we’re getting better. We’ll be back Monday in the MLK Tournament against a tough 3A Topsail team.”
The annual Martin Luther King Tournament will be held at Union High School Monday, with Union’s boys facing off with Topsail at 12 o’clock. The Spartans will then travel to take on the Midway Raiders Tuesday in a conference match up.
