Union High School hosted the annual MLK Basketball Jam Tournament Monday, and competed against Topsail High School in their own match up. Union and Topsail were a pretty even match, and it was a close game from start to finish. However, it was the Pirates who pushed ahead and secured a victory over the Spartans, 35-31.
In the first quarter, Union had a hard time scoring, and totaled only 4 points against Topsail’s 10 points. The second quarter showed more intensity from both teams, who each scored 8 points, bringing the halftime total to 18-12, Topsail in the lead. After halftime, Union really put on the pressure, inching closer to Topsail throughout the third. The quarter ended with Topsail barely ahead, 24-20. The close fight continued in the fourth, both teams hustling hard during every play to add 11 points on both ends of the scoreboard. Although they put up a valiant effort in the last few minutes, the Spartans fell to the Pirates, 35-31.
Tim Pope, Head Coach for Union, said, “We were a little better in the second half, and showed a lot more effort defensively. Brandon Lovette and Dezmond Faison played a good game for us. We continue to struggle putting the ball in the basket, which showed with us only scoring 31 points. We’ll get back to work tomorrow to get ready for a conference battle against Midway.”
Leading scorers for Union were Brandon Lovette with 9 points, Dezmond Faison with 8 points, Jajuan Newkirk with 6 points, Jamar Newkirk with 6 points.
The Spartans will travel to Midway High School Wednesday to continue their conference play.
