The Midway Raiders hosted the Union Spartans in a conference battle Wednesday night. Things got started with the JV game, an intense fight between the two teams. Midway powered through to defend their home turf, and fought for their win, 79-58.

Union jumped out with a slight lead in the first quarter, pulling ahead 18-11 at the sound of the buzzer. The young Raiders quickly rallied back in the second, scoring 23 points to overpower Union’s 10 points. The halftime score was 34-28, the Raiders in the lead. Although they made a commendable effort, scoring 30 points in the third and fourth, the Spartans were unable to match up to the Raiders’ 45 points. The final outcome was a Midway victory, 79-58.

Midway’s Coach Creech said, “We’re pleased with a win, but I felt like offensively and defensively we weren’t ready to play in the first half. After halftime, we made some good adjustments and our effort and intensity was a lot better. We’re pleased with a conference win, and we’ll start to prepare for our game Friday.”

Leading scorers for the JV Raiders were Paris Smith with 24 points, Shyheim Small with 14 points, Larry Blanks with 13 points.

Spartan Coach Register said, “I want to congratulate Coach Creech and his team on a win tonight. He’s got a mighty fine team and does a tremendous job with their program over here. I thought we had a great effort tonight overall. We did jump out ahead early, but their press began to get to us a little after a while. We also ran into some foul trouble, which limited us in some ways, but overall I’m proud of our boys’ effort tonight,”

Leading the scoring for the JV Spartans was Carter Spearman with 17 points, Devin Henry with 15 points, Chris Nash with 10 points.

The Raiders will travel to East Bladen Friday night to compete in a conference game. Union will travel to West Bladen Friday to continue their conference play.
