Facing off in Spartan Country Friday night were the Lady Patriots and the Lady Spartans. The two teams battled hard in a tough conference game, which was led into overtime before the Patriots pulled out a win, 42-41.
A tight game from the start, Union scored 9 points in the first, giving them only a small lead over Pender’s 8 points. The battle continued in the second, both teams fighting hard for every point. At halftime, the Spartans were leading 17-16. In the third, the Patriots rallied, and gained a two point lead over the Spartans, 23-21. However, the fourth quarter is what had everyone on the edge of their seats. As the clock ran, the two teams went back and forth, matching each other after every point. When the final buzzer sounded, it was a tied ballgame, 34-34. The fight continued as they headed into overtime. The game was as intense as ever, and with just a few seconds to go, Pender had the lead, 42-39. In the last 3 seconds, Union’s Brianna Blackmore makes an incredible shot, just a few inches from a tying three pointer. The end result was a Patriot victory, 42-41.
Leading scores for the Lady Spartans were Eva Long with 11 points, Destiny Robinson with 11 points, Shiquilla Walker with 6 points.
Bryant Register, Head Coach for Union, said, “I want to congratulate Coach Eakins and the Lady Patriots on the win tonight, they played a very good basketball game. Overall, it always hurts to lose, but I’m very proud of our young ladies and the way we battled tonight, They made a run at us in the third and got a lead, but we responded and regained the lead. We just didn’t close the game well. We’ve got to continue to focus on the fundamentals, mainly lay ups and free throws. It was a 41-42 overtime game, but when you take into consideration we missed 19 free throws, we need to do a better job. Overall I’m very proud of the way these ladies played tonight.”
The Lady Spartans will face off with the Lady Bulldogs at Wallace Saturday in a conference make up game.
