Clinton’s varsity boys and girls teams competed for the Four-County Conference Tournament Championship Friday evening. Clinton’s girls fell short to East Bladen, 56-52. Clinton’s boys earned a conference championship with a 70-66 win over Trask.

Trask led 13-11 over the Clinton after the first quarter, but Clinton took control of the game before halftime. Clinton led at the break, 36-29.

Trask closed the Clinton lead to 3 after the third quarter, but the Clinton seniors took the team under their wing during the closing minutes of the game. The Dark Horses finished runner-up in the conference tournament last season, and weren’t going to let it happen again.

JC Evans had 14 points to lead the Dark Horse charge, Jalen Banks chipped in 13. Thaxter Spruill dominated the game defensively by blocking 9 shots, and grabbing 12 rebounds. Spruill had a near triple-double with 7 points to go along with his block and rebound totals. Josiah Pope scored 7 for the Horses as well.

“It was a sweet win for our guys. We were really led by our seniors tonight. These guys really care about each other on and off the court, and that showed tonight, especially in the last 3 minutes” said Clinton’s head coach Randy Jordan.

Clinton won both the regular season and conference tournament this season, and are hoping that really improves their seeding in the state tournament. Playoff seedings and match-ups are to be announced Saturday afternoon.
