The Lakewood junior varsity are champions of the Carolina 1A basketball conference, winning 12 of their 14 conference games.
With the Leopards Friday night sweep of the Hobbton Wildcats, the JV ended the season with an overall record of 14-6.
Both teams fought hard, but Lakewood dominated the boards and Leopard quick hands forced turnovers.
With a final score of 86-44, the Leopards lacked 2 points of doubling the Wildcats’ score.
Hobbton head coach Wes Cone said he was proud of his team and said they continued to give it their all right up until the final buzzer.
“They played hard this game, just like they have all season. We are looking forward to next year,” Coach Cone said.
Top scorer in the game was Wildcat Ty Hunter, who put in 17 points. Walter Thompson was close behind with 15 points. Other scorers for the ‘Cats were Justin Adkins with 3; Malik Parker, 8; and Jaquan Farrior, with 1 point.
Lakewood head coach Sylvester Pittman was thrilled that his team finished the season No. 1.
“This was a great game for our team. The kids were really focused. They knew this win would make us conference champs. I’m looking for bigger and better things out of this team next season,” Coach Pittman expressed.
Leading the scoring for the Leopards was Jirah Cooper with 16 points. Johnny Owens put up 12 points; Kobe Jackson, scored 9; Shyheim Williams scored 7; Nasiem Devane and Nyquan Murphy each scored 6 points; Quamane Williams and William Peete each scored 4; Keshaun Bailey, 8; and Zach Tanner, Carcell Bennett, Tyler James, Tyquan Murphy, Otis Jones, and Pate Holland all added 2 points.
