Midway Middle’s girls continued their winning streak Monday afternoon, defeating Union Middle 39-7 on Spartan turf.
“It was a good win for us,” said Midway coach Selena Joseph. “Both teams played good, we were just more aggressive and our fast break worked really well for us.
The young Raider girls played a strong first quarter, holding their opponents scoreless while raking in 16 points of their own. The second frame was another strong one for Midway, who went into the half up 20-4.
“We scored a lot of points off our fast break,” Joseph said, “and Union struggled with our defense in the first half. That combination gave us the lead.”
In the third quarter, Union found footing of its own, trying to claw their way back into the game, but a determined Midway team fought back, and the earlier lead prevented the upset. After three quarters, Midway had a 32-7 lead.
“Union played a solid third quarter, and they had us for a while, but my girls were able to work their way through it. I’m pleased with how they played.”
Leading scorers for Midway Middle were Alex Cannady with 14 points and Leah Williams with 6. Others scoring for the young Raiders were JJ Sankey, 4, Madelyn Royal, 4, Angie Naylor, 4, Casey McLamb, 2, Alissa Wrench, 2, Rachel Hodges, 2.
