Midway took on West Bladen on the baseball diamond Friday evening, and got away with an 8-6 win. It was a slow start for Midway as West Bladen plated 5 runs in the first inning. Midway scored 2 in their half of the first. Midway then scored 3 in the second to tie the game at 5.

Midway scored 2 runs in the third and a run in the fourth, while the Knights added a run in the fourth.

Taylor Calcutt started on the mound for Midway, and was the winning pitcher. Calcutt went 4 innings, striking out 2, walking 2, and allowing 6 runs, 3 of which were unearned.

Matthew Barefoot entered the game in the fifth inning, pitching the last 3 innings. Barefoot was incredible on the mound, striking out 8 of the 9 batters he faced, and retiring all of them. He also helped his own cause by going 4-4 at the plate with a double, a triple, 2 singles, 2 RBIs, and 2 stolen bases.

Kyle Hawley was 2-4 with a double and 2 RBIs, Luke Clark had a double, Austin Hardison went 2-4 with 2 runs scored, Dylan Hardison had a single and an RBI, and Troy Spell and Taylor Calcutt each had a hit.

“Being down 5-0 showed a lot about our team. We were resilient and I loved the way we fought. Matt was big for us coming in and giving West Bladen nothing,” said Midway’s head baseball coach Jason Fussell.

Midway is now 2-0 on the year, as the weather has forced some of their games to be rescheduled.
