Sampson Middle’s boys, with a lot of help from the experienced eighth-graders on the team, took down rival Hobbton Middle Thursday night 50-32.

Coach Ron Davis complimented the play of both teams, noting that all the guys had come ready to play.

“It was a great basketball game,” Davis said. “Both teams certainly came to play. We had our hands full.”

Sampson kept the lead throughout the game, but Hobbton continued to nip at their heels. After one period, the Dark Horses were up 14-6, and by the half, Sampson had taken a 28-14 lead.

But Davis noted that the score was not a true reflection of the intensity of the game.

“They (Hobbton) are well coached and much improved. They executed their press breaker well against our full court press. We just had a few more shots to fall,” Davis said.

The Sampson coach also praised his eighth-graders, noting that they stepped it up for the team Thursday. “They carried us defensively,” the coach stressed.

Sampson added 22 more points in the third quarter to Hobbton’s 18 for the final 50-32 score.

Leading the scoring for Hobbton was X. Howard with 19. He was followed by K. Williams with 7; C. Williams, 6; M. Boykin, 5; Z. Autry, 5; T. Leggett, 2; J. Kamara, 2; J. Owens, 2; and c. perry, 2.

Sampson faces off against Roseboro-Salemburg Monday.

Hobbton’s stats were not called in.
