Thanks to the Simple Gifts scholarship, I am able to attend Wofford College located in downtown Spartanburg, SC. Wofford is a small liberal arts college with an awesome faculty: student ratio of 11:1. I have found both the faculty and support staff to be very personable and helpful.

One of the things I like about Wofford College is that each January, it offers interim classes. Interim classes are designed to broaden one’s horizon by allowing them to explore a specific subject/idea for the entire month. This year, I took the Inventor’s Lab. My professor for this course was Philosophy Assistant Professor, Dr. James Bednar. The first day of class he said, “Creativity isn’t just in the head” and I definitely agree. Creativity can actually stem from anything and this class was an example of that. Inventor’s Lab gave us, the students, the opportunity to make our ideas a reality.

We were fortunate to have two different types of 3Dimensional printers and to learn about new technologies. We created various objects in class with Google SketchUp, a 3Dimensional modeling program used to design objects in civil and mechanical engineering, film, etc. I chose to create and print a Secure Digital (SD) cardholder that holds 8 SD cards with a cover to protect them. Also, I designed and printed an external hard drive holder so it will be easier to access my hard drive when I am DJing. Other creations by students included a shoe dryer with a fan and a belt buckle that vibrates when you face north. It was a great class – especially considering it was Wofford’s first one. Currently, Wofford College is building a fab lab specifically for students to use to create their ideas. I can’t wait to see it.

As a college sophomore, I would encourage all high school students to explore and visit many different colleges. You will know when you step on the campus if it is right for you. Also, if you are interested in a liberal arts college, consider applying for the Simple Gifts Scholarship. I am glad I did.
