Yet another bridge is closed in Sampson County due to maintenance, this one in the northern end of the county near Dunn. This is the third structure in the last two weeks to be shut for repairs.
State Road 1005, known as Green Path Road, has a bridge closed just south of Savannah Hill Road. The section of Green Path Road that is impacted by the closure runs between US 421 (Plain View Highway) and NC 55 (Harnett-Dunn Highway).
Department of Transportation officials closed the road Monday.
“Upon inspection of the bridge we noticed some problems with the substructure,” said Shannon Baylor in a telephone interview Monday. Baylor is with Sampson County Bridge Maintenance, an arm of DOT.
“We had to go into action immediately,” he explained. “We are getting close to school starting and we want to make sure that the secondary structures are up to the weight standards so it will allow the (school) buses.”
“We are taking care of this so that (the bridge) will be up to par for school buses,” he reiterated, noting that these concerns were raised at the end of last week, causing them to take swift action to make sure everything was safe.
He said the concerns were noticed during a routine inspection, and officials decided that it needed to be closed immediately. Baylor said it will mainly impact local traffic.
“We are hoping to have it done by Thursday,” he said, stating that the department is continuing on their regular routine checks.
The bridge is expected to reopen after 5 p.m. Thursday, July 31, and Baylor said he expects minimal traffic impact.
