The big stage of the Sampson Community Theatre has been transformed into a fifth floor walk-up brownstone apartment in New York City thanks to the efforts of Dan Holland, Madison Holland and Gary Wilson. Their biggest problem was figuring out how to construct the skylight because the work had to be done on ladders, but due to their persistence the project is complete and ready for the opening of “Barefoot in the Park” at 8 p.m. on Friday April 11.
The shows sponsor, Clinton Appliance and Furniture, has provided tables, chairs, sofas and other items for the set, and the cast is rehearsing every day and every weekend in order to provide our audiences with one of Neil Simon’s most popular plays.
There is special tribute to be paid to the backstage workers because their efforts are crucial to the play going smoothly. Early in the play they must transform the set from an empty apartment to one with all its furniture in place. Jessica Watts is the stage manager; her assistant is Nikki Lopez and her stage hands include Christine Watts and James Varker. Many thanks to these volunteers as well as to Will Hernan who will be in charge of the lighting.
We caution you that if you do not like to laugh there is no reason for you to see this show because it will make you laugh in spite of yourself, but if you do like to laugh you will spend a delightful two hours enjoying yourself.
2014 Patron Sponsor tickets are still available for a donation to the theater. These consist of two complimentary tickets to every show we produce in 2014. Contact any Board Member to obtain yours and be entertained all year. Thoughts until next week:
• Man is distinguished from all other creatures by the faculty of laughter.
• They are a person of sense who does not grieve for what they have not, but rejoices in what they have.
• “Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much.”……Oscar Wilde
