“The Dixie Swim Club” had its opening night this past Friday evening and Kathy Day, in her debut as a director, was as nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs. She shouldn’t have been, however, as her talented cast did a really good job for their first performance of this show which takes place over a time span of 33 years, beginning some 22 years after the five ladies had graduated from the college they represented as a swimming team.

You will see them on August weekends at a beach cottage on the Outer Banks at ages 44, then at 49, again at 54 and finally at age 77. You will learn of their triumphs and their failures as they age from reunion to reunion and laugh at the humor they have in their lives. In short, this is a feel-good show that will allow you to laugh and forget your problems for a few hours.

“The Dixie Swim Club” will have final performances this weekend with shows at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28 and Saturday, March 1 with a matinee at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 2. We thank Owens Home Furnishing, Inc. for sponsoring the show and providing the set furniture, Dan Holland and Gary Wilson for constructing the set, Sarah Day for operating the lighst and sound and Katelynn Bass-Stafford for being the stage manager. Don’t forget this is the last weekend to enjoy this comedy and watch five talented actors age from 44 to 77 right before your eyes.

Tom Wilbur held auditions for “Barefoot In The Park” this past weekend, and thanks to good fortune was able to cast this Neal Simon mature comedy to his satisfaction. It was good fortune that Erica Miller and Nick Owen auditioned and won the leading roles of a young bride and her lawyer husband moving into their first apartment while Gary Wilson is cast as an older neighbor in the apartment building, Gretta Steffens is the bride’s doting mother and G. Wayne Melvin is a telephone repair man. A small role as a delivery man will be played by a mystery guest who will be different for each performance. The cast has already had a read-through and a rehearsal for this show which opens Friday, April 11 at 8 p.m.

Thoughts until next week:

• No person is a failure who is enjoying life.

• Time and money spent in helping people do more for themselves is far better than mere giving.
