A Labor Day Booze It and Lose It checkpoint along N.C. 24, just west of Clinton, last Friday night put the brakes on dozens of traffic violators and assisted in the capture of three wanted individuals.

N.C. Highway Patrol Sgt. Byran Smith said the overall campaign was a success, and he offered his thanks to agencies that partnered with the patrol for the Aug. 30 checkpoint. Troopers were assisted by the Sampson County Sheriff’s Department and the Clinton Police Department, as well as the Clinton Fire Department, whose firefighters, Smith said, were an added help, providing the extra lighting needed on the checkpoint scene.

“It (the campaign) could not have been a success without them,” Smith said of all those who assisted in the campaign.

In all, there were 59 violations reported, including four driving while impaired charges leveled; 10 driving while license revoked charges issued; one reckless driving, four child restraint, one drug violation, one driving without insurance violation and 38 other traffic offenses, to include speeding.

Names of two of the three wanted individuals were not immediately available, but a third, Edward Micah Howard, was taken into custody and charged with the August 2012 robbery at the Silver Spoon outside of Salemburg. Howard came through the checkpoint Friday night and when his name was checked in the DMV database it revealed that he was wanted by Sampson authorities in connection with the robbery.

Howard was jailed under a $100,000 bond, charged with attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon.
