Jay Sullivan, who farms in Sampson County, was awarded the highest honor the Corn Growers Association gives at the recent Joint Commodities Conference held at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel and Convention Center in the Research Triangle Park.

Dennis Waller, of Wayne County, presented the award to his neighbor and friend. Waller was elected vice president of the Corn Growers Association of North Carolina at this meeting.

For the past two years, Sullivan has served as president of the Corn Growers Association. He took his job very seriously representing the association at many meetings, answering emails, phone calls, and contacting congressman and North Carolina General Assembly members about legislation that affects North Carolina farmers. While serving as vice president or president, if he truly believed a research project or other funding request was important he would try to find the funding for the request, always making sure funds were used wisely.

He and his son, Jarmon, have taken time to give tours of their diversified farm to international trade groups, congressional staff, and other visitors at the request of Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. He and his wife, Kim, have made their home and farm an inviting place where extension agents and almost anyone involved in agriculture feel welcome to stop by any time, especially during lunch where they know they will get a delicious home cooked meal.

Waller, who served as awards chairman, said he knew firsthand what a dedicated leader Sullivan had been and that the Corn Growers Association would continue to call on Sullivan for his guidance and help.
