Richard E. Oakes II, M.D.
Richard E. Oakes II, M.D., died Sept. 24, 2013 at the age of 43 after a year long battle with colon cancer.
Richard was raised in Huntington, W.V. and graduated from both Marshall U. and West Virginia U. School of Medicine. He was a Board Certified Obstetrician/Gynecologist. He moved to Clinton, N.C. with his family in 2005 to practice at Sampson Ob/Gyn and Sampson Regional Medical Center in Clinton before relocating to W.V. to join Valley Health Systems.
Richard loved music and enjoyed going to dozens of concerts ranging from Jimmy Buffet to Josh Groban. He also loved sushi and fishing, and spent as much time as possible at the beach with his children. Soccer was a passion of his and he enjoyed passing that skill on to his children, assisting with coaching when needed. He was an animal lover, especially cats, and the feeling was mutual. Most people who knew Richard knew that he was an avid gun collector and enjoyed target shooting and sporting clays. He also had a photographic memory and could quote movie lines for any situation.
Richard is survived by his children, Michael and Jillian Oakes; his wife, Dr. Ada Conway, all of Clinton; as well as his parents, Drs. Richard and Sally Oakes of Huntington.
He will be laid to rest in Woodmere Cemetery in Huntington and services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28.
Anyone wishing to honor his memory with a charitable donation is asked to support their local animal shelter/humane society, as he had a special place in his heart for stray animals in need.
