William E. Merritt, III, 73
EL CERRITO, CALIF. — William Edward Merritt, III, M.D. passed away on Sept. 10, 2013 at his home in El Cerrito, Calif. He was 73 years old.
William (affectionately known as Buster Brown) earned his education at Sampson High School (1957); Hampton University (B.S. 1961); Howard University (M.D. 1965) and specialized in Womens’ Health (Obstetrics-Gynecology) from University of Southern California (1972).
He is survived by his son, William E. Merritt, IV of Berkeley, Calif., and his brother John C. Merritt, M.D. of Clinton, N.C.
Other surviving family members include: first cousins, Mattie Solice Grigsby of Charlotte, N.C. and Sherwood Reed Holland of San Diego, Calif.; aunts, Drs. Rena Merritt Bancroft, Ph.D. of San Francisco, Calif., and Georgetta Merritt Campbell, Ph.D. of Silver Spring, Md.; two nieces, Favia C. Merritt and Margie M. Merritt; and two nephews, Marton L. Merritt and Brian R. Merritt. A host of other cousins grieve his passing as he will be sorely missed.
Burial cremation services have proceeded in California while there will be no formal services in Clinton, N.C.
