Identifying with Christ

By Gilbert Owens - Contributing columnist

As a believer, you and I must consider all the facts/truths of God’s Word in order to identify with Jesus Christ. This is how every believer must live. After considering, meditating and believing the truth, we as believers will be able to comply with Romans 6:12-13.

Romans 6:12-13 says, “Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto god through Jesus Christ our Lord. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.”

Every believer is baptized by the Holy Spirit into the Body of Christ. As a result, in order for us to truly repent of our sins, we must first identify with Jesus Christ actual physical body. We must do so because Romans 6:6 says our old man, (entire person), is crucified with Jesus Christ so that the body of sin might be destroyed that henceforth we should not serve sin.

The death of Jesus Christ on the cross, forever, broke sin’s control over us. Not only does death have no more dominion over us, but sin no longer has dominion over us. And if you identify with Christ, you will walk by a faith that tells you sin has no more dominion over you. And it is your faith in this truth that will give you the power and the strength to reduce the amount of sin in your life. And more importantly, it is your faith in this truth that will give you the power and strength to lay aside the sin or sins that so easily beset you time and time again. I am not only saying this based on truth but also based on experience.

We must believe by faith and truth that the moment we accepted Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior our old ways, our old sins, our old bad habits, our sinful lustful desires, our pride and selfishness were all crucified with Christ. These things and others were crucified with Christ so that our body of sin might be destroyed and as a result we will not longer be able to serve sin. The word might becomes will when we walk in the truth above by faith.

Do you realize the Lord has fixed it so you and I are no longer able to serve sin!!! But until you believe that by faith and walk thereby, we will continue to serve sin even thou the Lord has fixed. That is why the Bible proclaims in both the Old and New Testament … The just must walk by faith.

When we seriously walk by faith by identifying with Christ, we will truly be able to say to ourselves and to others, old things have passed away, all things have become new, for I am truly a new creature in Christ.

Here is where the problem comes in. Oftentimes when a person gets saved, the first thing that is said is, ….”you’ve got to get busy in a church.” As a result we as Pastors and leaders of the church get so caught up in keeping the new convert busy and under our control, that the new convert gets confused as to who his/her true master is.

In other words, the new convert, as time goes on becomes a full-pledged member of some church and as a result, the new convert starts to identify with his/her church or Pastor or denomination, instead of identifying with Jesus Christ. By doing so, the new convert strength and power given to him/her through Christ’s death becomes diluted and the old man or old nature creeps back in. This of course, causes the new believer, over time, to serve sin again.

The bible predicts that in the last days perilous times will come to the church. Perilous times are here because as the Bible declares many will depart from the faith. After conversion the main tenet of our faith is for all believers to identify with Jesus Christ. This is what is most important.
