Prosperity and good success

By Gilbert Owens - Guest columnist

All of us have a desire to be prosperous and to have a good successful life. Many of us have been trained and taught to believe that the best way to achieve both is to get a good education and to have a good career. Sadly, neither of those is a guarantee to achieve prosperity and to have good success.

There is, however, a guaranteed way to achieve prosperity while at the same time having a life that is a good success. That guarantee is in the word of God.

When Joshua was about to take leadership of the Jewish people upon the death of Moses, God told Joshua something in Joshua 1:8 that we all should pay close attention. God told Joshua that if he would meditate on God’s Word, both day and night, then and only then will he make his way prosperous and then and only then will he have good success.

The inference here is that if you meditate (study) on God’s Word day and night you will be more likely to observe and be obedient to God’s Word (Joshua 1:7) and you will be strong and courageous.

It is clear that the secret to having a good success and being prosperous is to study and meditate on God’s Word both day and night. This is separate from going to church on Sunday. This is separate from going to Bible Study during the week. This is something you must do individually on a daily and nightly basis.

While studying and meditating on God’s Word, your soul will prosper. The Bible clearly says you will only prosper as your soul prospers. Prosperity and good success only comes from spending time with God. And the best way to spend time with God is to study and meditate on His Word.

It is sad that many of our churches do not fully encourage its members to study the Word of God on a daily consistent basis. They oftentimes encourage their members to just come to church and they will receive all that they need. That is a lie and it is highly deceptive. They can receive all that they need by spending time with God. I am not suggesting that you stop going to church. But I am suggesting that you spend more time alone with God than you do in church if you really want to be prosperous and if you really want to have good success.

Good success is doing the will of God for your life. None of us will ever know what that is until we spend time with the one who establishes such will and purpose. Also, good success is not the same for everyone because everyone does not have the same purpose.

True prosperity is not just money and material wealth. True prosperity is being able to be content with what you have and don’t have. True prosperity is also being happy with what you have and don’t have. A person is truly prosperous when he doesn’t have a need or desire to keep up with his neighbors.

Psalm 1:1-3 says, “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the Law (Word) of the Lord; and in his Law (Word) doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.”

Psalm 37:4 also says, “Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desire of thine heart.” If you enjoy being in church more than you do spending time with God alone, then you have a serious problem. The serious problem is that you will never find true prosperity and you will never have good success.

Make this your number one priority even if it means spending less time with family and less time in church: Spend time with God and his Word both day and night.
