Well, Adam Wainwright is predicted to be out for the season. And as a big-time St. Louis Cardinals fan, I want to go stick my head under a pillow and wallow in the sadness that this news brings me. The Cardinal ace and multiple 20 win and NL Cy Young Award winner, Wainwright, suffered an Achilles injury in the top of the fifth inning while batting against the Milwaukee Brewers in Saturday’s 5-3 win. The news is devastating for the entire Cardinal organization and fan base, as the team is off to their best start since 1982 with a 12-4 record. The loss of Wainwright brings all sorts of bad vibes into my head as I see all of the numbers that St. Louis will miss for likely the remainder of the season.

However, this brings some good news to a Cardinal fan in Sampson County. Former Clinton High School and UNCW catcher Cody Stanley, who has been in the St Louis farm system for years, has been called up to the big leagues.

Stanley has hit 5 home-runs in 15 games in this year’s minor league campaign. He will more than likely be used in pinch-hitting roles, as All-Star catcher Yadier Molina and back-up Tony Cruz will handle most of the duties behind the plate.

It is a huge opportunity for Stanley, one that he has been waiting for for a long time. This much deserved call-up will please many Sampson County baseball fans.
