The Midway Raiders got even with their rivals from Hobbton on Monday. After losing their soccer match on the Wildcats’ field last week, the Raiders returned the favor Monday with a 2-1 victory.

The home team got on the board 15 minutes into the opening frame on a penalty kick by Jonathan Garcia. That score would hold until after intermission.

With 5 minutes gone in the second half, the Wildcats evened the score. Eber Gomez found pay dirt on an assist by Efrain Velardo. The score would remain tied for 22 minutes.

Both teams had several unsuccessful shots on goal during the period. With 13:09 remaining in the match, Garcia scored again for the Raiders. Alex Boggs provided the assist and the Raiders led 2-1. Midway’s defense was able to protect the lead for a Raider victory.

“They stepped up,” asserted Raider head coach Allen McLamb. “Eber (Gomez)is a good player for Hobbton. We knew what we had to do. We had to control the middle better than we did last time, and we did it. We stepped up and communicated better than we have all year.”

“It was not the best game we’ve played, but it is our third game,” declared Hobbton coach Bryan Martinez. “Monday is always a lazy day for us, but it was a good game.”

The Raiders, now 1-1, will travel to Triton today (Wednesday). The Wildcats with a record of 2-1 will visit South Johnston this evening (Wednesday).
