On Saturday, March 29, The LAVA 17U Flames volleyball club won the Eastern Regional Championship of the Carolina Region of USA Volleyball. The Lava team defeated the Jammers Red club from Durham to claim the title. The team won 16U Bronze last year, and this year they got 17U Silver. The LAVA organization had three teams with 27 girls competing in the 15U, 16U and 17U divisions.

Head coach, Dan Heinz, said “It was an exhausting day for the girls, they played seven matches. That is what high school teams play in two weeks. By the final match the girls were playing on pure adrenaline and the support of equally exhausted cheering family and friends. The Jammers are a physically intimidating team, with middle and outside hitters over 6’ tall. We are a young team, meaning most of our girls could be playing 15 or 16,but they are very athletic and we seem to peak at the right time. This makes back to back Regional Championships.”

This year’s championship was especially meaningful for the team, because Coach Heinz wife, Kaye Heinz had suffered a stroke on Wednesday night. Coach Dan was at UNC Hospital Saturday with his wife. His daughter, Anna Heinz is a member of the Lava team and she continued to play on Saterday. The assistant Coach Allen Jackson stepped up to coach the team. The girls wore red ribbons for “Stroke Awareness” and borrowed the NCSU slogan of “Playing for Kaye”.

“We stress developing solid volleyball skills and a positive work ethic. Our practices are often observed by parents and family, we encourage that. We are family friendly, and as coaches strive to be a positive influence for life, as well as good teachers of the game. All of our teams were successful this year, our 15U team made it to the semi finals in regular season, and the 16U had one regular season championship runner-up finish and made it to the semi finals in the regional,” explained Coach Dan.

LAVA will continue volleyball training over the summer offering clinics, open gym nights and private lessons. For more information contact Dan Heinz
