Lakewood’s baseball team wrapped up their season Friday night in a season-ending loss at Rosewood. Earlier in the week, the Leopards upset second seeded Tarboro, at their place, 10-0 to advance to round 2.
In the game on Tuesday night, Zack Tanner pitched 6 1/3 innings, and Austin Tanner pitched the remaining 2/3 innings to seal the deal for Lakewood. Zack Tanner was brilliant on the mound, striking out 11 batters.
J.J. Tanner went 3-5, Austin Tanner went 3-4, Willie Herring went 2-5 and Chandler Honeycutt went 2-4 in Tuesday night’s win.
Ross Strickland took the mound against Rosewood on Friday night for the Leopards, as he pitched a good 5 1/3 innings. Austin Tanner pitched the final 1 2/3 innings. Lakewood struggled to hit the ball early, and fell into a 5-0 hole that they could never get out of. They scored 2 runs in the late innings, but just couldn’t seem to get over the hump.
“We were hitting the ball well, we were just hitting the ball right to them,” said Lakewood’s head coach Raymond Spell. Spell also noted how proud he was of the players for the progression they made in his first season as Lakewood’s head coach.
Lakewood will graduate six seniors, but return ten players to next year’s squad. The Lakewood baseball program seems to be in good hands with the returning players, and their coaches.
