South River Electric Membership Corporation’s foundation, the Community Assistance Corporation, is helping schools and organizations build a stronger community. The group awarded $45,125.17 in grants through the Operation Round Up program.
The Community Assistance Corporation presented $5,000 grants to the Averasboro Battlefield Commission; Gray’s Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Station 18; and the Tuscarora Council of Boy Scouts of America. The Godwin-Falcon Fire Department, Inc. received a grant for $5,329.47.
In addition, the foundation awarded the following amounts to local educational institutions: the Community Action of Cumberland County Head Start program, $9,829.70; Hobbton Middle School, $10,000; Lillington Shawtown Elementary, $4,966.
South River EMC members participate in Operation Round Up by agreeing to have their bill rounded up to the next dollar each month. If their bill is $112.87, the 13¢ remaining will be put into an account managed by the Community Assistance Corporation.
Quarterly, funds are distributed to local service agencies, educational pursuits or to aid families who are experiencing unusually grave times. The next funding opportunity will be in September, applications are due to the Cooperative by August 23.
Since the Operation Round Up program began in 2009, over $961,320 has been donated back to local communities.
South River EMC is a locally-owned and operated electric cooperative, which provides electric service to 42,000 homes, farms and businesses in parts of Harnett, Cumberland, Sampson, Johnston and Bladen counties.
