A 30-year-old Sampson County man has been identified as the victim in an election night home invasion that also injured two others.

Sampson County Sheriff’s authorities released the name of Donald Jerome Harvey, of 3377 Faison Highway, Clinton, as the victim killed in the late night invasion and shooting. Names of the two injured victims are still being withheld. Officers cite security as the reason for keeping their identities under wraps.

Medical examiner Dr. Carl Barr was expected to begin an autopsy on Harvey Thursday, but results of that autopsy were not released at press time.

“The autopsy is forthcoming,” Dr. Barr said Wednesday afternoon, noting that he likely would begin the process sometime Thursday.

This early in the investigation, the medical examiner said all he really knew was that the deceased had apparently been shot multiple times.

Even as the autopsy is under way, investigators area are continuing a search for three men believed responsible for the home invasion and shooting.

The State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to assist the sheriff’s officers with the investigation, which began after a call to E911 sent officers to 3377 Faison Highway where they found Harvey’s body, lying shot to death in the residence. Two others had been wounded.

The suspects, described only as black males, reportedly wearing ski masks at the time of the incident were traveling in a small, dark-colored passenger vehicle. Although the incident is being called a home invasion, Sheriff Jimmy Thornton is assuring residence that the events that unfolded Tuesday night were not likely random.

“There was an intent, in my opinion,” the sheriff offered Wednesday. “This in some way involved the drug culture … I think that’s what prompted this incident.”

Further details remain sketchy at this time. Thornton said when more details would be released as officers were able to do so.
