An Autryville man was airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center after a single-vehicle wreck Saturday night just 4.4 miles northwest of Roseboro.

Thomas Carl Hicks, 42, of 1898 Carry Bridge Road, Autryville, was traveling on Old Peniel Church Road towards Carry Bridge Road Saturday around 8 p.m. on his 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle. According to reports from the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Hicks hit a curve going approximately 65 mph, crossed the centerline, traveled off the road to the left and flipped the motorcycle.

Hicks was immediately airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington and was still there Monday morning — a condition report was not available at press time.

Trooper E.T. Brown noted in his report that the crash scene was “compromised” due to the fact that the bike had been moved off the roadway prior to his arrival.

According to reports, damage to the Harley Davidson was estimated at $5,000. Hicks was charged with driving while under the influence and reckless driving.

Man charged in accident

An Autryville man was involved in a single-vehicle wreck Saturday afternoon near Clement after his vehicle ran off the road and flipped.

According to reports from the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Samuel Layton McPhail, 19, of 2390 Maxwell Road, was traveling north on Ernie Road towards Tew Road in his 1994 Chevy truck when his vehicle went onto the northbound shoulder before crossing the centerline and skidding onto the southbound lane of Ernie Road. McPhail’s vehicle then hit a ditch and came to rest on “its top”.

Reports estimate the vehicle was traveling 35 mph at the time of impact, causing an estimated $4,000 damage.

McPhail, who suffered only minor injuries in the incident, was charged with driving left of center.

Yep Lafus another L'wood grad from A'ville. Class of 86 to be exact lol. If it wasn't for the L'wood classes in the 80's the SI would be seriously lacking for newsworthy articles.

Driving a motorcycle at night going 65mph and drunk. I can see that was real smart. Let me guess. Another Lakewood High grad? How stupid can you be, hicks? The SI pointed out twice hicks was riding a 2007 Harley Davidson. I guess they wanted to show an Autryville redneck with money.
