A flock of pink flamingos landed in the yard of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church member Jackie Pope recently. The flocking is a fun raising activity for new playground equipment for the church.

One area church has found a unique way to raise funds for purchasing new playground equipment for its youngsters.

When Jackie Pope looked out her window last week and saw a flock of pink flamingos in her yard, she thought “Oh my gosh, I have been flocked.” Pope had heard that this was going to be a fundraiser for her church, Mt. Vernon Baptist, and she knew it was going to come to her yard at some time. She just didn’t think it was going to be so soon .

“I take pride in keeping my yard neat, but when I saw all those pink flamingos, I just didn’t know what to think,” said Pope. “As much as I like my yard neat I am even more proud of the leaders of our youth and children at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. They are just awesome and do a wonderful job in teaching and leading our young people,” explained Pope.

The Mt. Vernon member shared that these youth and children’s leaders had just finished with Vacation Bible School and had envisioned some new playground equipment for the church. “It was obvious after having over 100 attending each night that we were in need of expansion on the playground,” stated Pope.

“Each Sunday morning and Wednesday night these children are in their classrooms being taught about the love of Jesus Christ and how to deal with everyday adversities, but we have many activities where they need a safe place to play and fellowship,” added the flocked member.

The fundraiser is for that purpose. When you see the flock of flamingos in your yard, you have been flocked by the church. All members have to do then is simply decide who they would like to see flocked.

“You make a donation to the playground equipment fund and they will place the flock in another member’s yard,” noted Pope. “You can also buy insurance so that you cannot be flocked again. It is all in fun. I can’t wait to pass the fun on to someone else and give them the opportunity to have some fun and share in our project.”

She also noted that the flamingo activity reminded her of a quote from Winston Churchill, “It is what you earn that makes a living. It is what you give that makes a life.”
