The Dark Horse junior varsity boys and girls teams traveled to Leopard Country Monday night and swept Lakewood in their one and only meeting of the basketball season.

Clinton’s girls got off to a big start, leading 13-4 by the end of the first quarter. The Lady Leopards mounted a comeback in the second quarter and managed to hold the Dark Horses to only 2 points to their 9 by the end of the first half.

The second half was more evenly played with both teams coming on strong defensively and offensively, but the Clinton girls were able to hold on to the lead, winning 35-31

For the Lady Dark Horses, Yasmine Fryar was the leading scorer with 8 points. Brielle Mitchell scored 7; Zoey Harris, 5, and Yasmine Williams and Jacklyn Parker each scored 4 points.

Leopard Alexis Williams was top scorer of the game with 12 points. Justina Henry scored 5 for Lakewood; Jasmine Williams and Jada Moore each scored 4 points.

Clinton head coach Regina Parker said she was pleased with the win. “It was a hard-fought game. They put a lot of pressure on us and we had a lot of mistakes and turnovers, but overall my girls played hard and finished it out,” she said proudly.

Lakewood head coach Lofton Kerr seemed to take the loss in stride. “Clinton played pretty good. We missed too many layups, at least 20, and had too many turnovers,” he said, adding with a laugh, “We just played too fast, but that’s how the JV play.”

Clinton’s record moves to 3-1 and their next game is Thurs., Dec. 12 at home against Wallace-Rose Hill. Lakewood’s record is even at 1-1 and they play Wednesday, Dec. 11 at Whiteville.

JV Boys

In the boys JV game, Clinton took an 8-point lead early in the first quarter, but the Leopards battled back and tied that score before the end of the period, and eventually gained the lead for the first time with 6:29 left in the second quarter. The score was back and forth for the next six monutes, but Lakewood finally pulled ahead to 27-22 by intermission.

The second half was a different game. Clinton came out strong and quickly caught up and passed the Leopards. By the end of the third quarter, the Dark Horses were ahead by 8. In the fourth quarter, Clinton went on a 14-7 run to pull even further away to get the 47-63 win.

Top scorer for the game was Lakewood’s Mike Graham with 23 points. Leopard Deshaun Wilson scored 11.

For the Dark Horses, J. Best was leading scorer with 13 points; R. Faison, 12 points; M. Boykin, 11; M. Robinson, 7; K. Morrisey and E. Howard, each scored 6 points.

Clinton head coach Bobby Lamb said he was happy to come away with the win, and his team continues its undefeated streak at 4-0.

“Lakewood came out in the first half very aggressive and played really well, but I felt like we were able to pick up our play in the third quarter. Our pressure against them worked. We made the free throws and the lay-ups when we needed to,” he explained. “Lakewood is a good team and well-coached.”

Lamb added that the family and fans of his players were also an important part of the team. “We thank them for Dark Horse pride.”

Clinton JV boys go up against Union in Spartan Country Friday night and the Leopards host Rosewood Tuesday.
