SWANSBORO — The Lady Dark Horses participated in the East Central 2-A Conference tennis tournament Tuesday Oct. 9 in Swansboro. Representing CHS playing singles were Paige Tatum and Breanna Worrells, and the doubles teams were Hannah Smith and Caroline Barwick, and Nicole Spell and Tamara Murphy. Eligible to play but unable due to injuries were the team of Tiara Howard and Collynn Wells.
Smith and Barwick were going into the tournament seeded No. 2 based on their performance in the East Central conference season.
In the tournament, the Smith-Barwick team opened with a first-round bye before defeating Maggie Weis/Madison Scholar of East Duplin 6-1, 6-0 in the second round. In the semifinals, they faced Topsail and defeated Caroline Tobin/Lauren Smith) 6-4, 6-0. The top two teams in the conference met again in the finals of the tournament. The East Duplin team of Pierson/Grady defeated Smith/Barwick team 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).
The CHS juniors advance to the NCHSAA 2-A East Regional’s on Oct. 19-20 at Greene Central High. They will be joined in the regionals in doubles by Savannah Pierson and Abigail Grady of East Duplin, Emily Scarborough-Katie Jingling of Swansboro, Caroline Tobin-Lauren Smith of Topsail and Brittany Russ-Mary Lang of Croatian.
