Scammers attempted to victimize a 67-year-old Clinton man but the would-be victim outsmarted them, calling the police instead of falling prey to their intended crime.

The man called police after he was notified by telephone that he had won $1 million and a Mercedes Benz.

According to the 67-year-old, the caller told him all he had to do to claim his prize was purchase a Green Dot money card and then call him back with the card number. The caller, in turn, said he would then put his prize winnings on the card.

Rather than purchase the card and fall victim to the alleged scheme, the man contacted law enforcement officers who, in turn, called the 800-number provided.

Officers noted in reports that they spoke to a man who appeared to have a Jamaican accent, but the man claimed his call was no scam.

The officers then researched the number on the Internet, finding a site which indicated others had been called about the same kind of prize.

Law enforcement continues to warn residents to pay careful attention to such calls and to do as the 67-year-old — alert authorities before sending any money or purchasing money cards.
