Three Clinton residents have found themselves in trouble with law enforcement in another state, and all are now facing drug charges because of it.
According to information obtained from The Columbia County News-Times, the three — Deynae Monique Herring, 23; Tony Chevallier, 34; and Malcolm Lee Henry Jr., 19, all of Clinton — were charged with trafficking cocaine and marijuana after being stopped on Interstate 20 early Wednesday morning.
The news article noted that a Columbia County deputy stopped a Volkswagon Passat on eastbound I-20 just before 1 a.m.. All three were in the car at the time of the stop. The deputy, reports note, asked them to step out for questioning. Instead, Herring reportedly jumped into the driver’s seat and sped away, leading deputies on a brief chase into Richmond County. When Herring finally pulled over, deputies found 499 grams of cocaine and 15.5 grams of marijuana in the car.
Herring, Chevallier and Henry were charged with trafficking cocaine and possession of marijuana. Herring also was charged with fleeing and attempting to elude an officer, reckless driving and failure to maintain lane.
All three are being held in the Columbia County Detention Center without bond, according to jail records.
According to the N.C. Department of Corrections, Chevallier has been in and out of trouble with law enforcement for several years. He was released from prison in 2008, and has been convicted, DOC shows, on myriad crimes, among them drug trafficking, drug possession, assault with a deadly weapon and assault on a female.
Herring and Henry did not have DOC records.
