Clinton’s Lady Dark Horses, playing Union for the second time in a week, split wins with the Spartan girls, with the JV falling in 1-2 and the varsity getting the win 3-1.
For the varsity, it was the second win against the Sampson County team, made sweeter Thursday afternoon because it was played in Dark Horse territory.
Clinton came from behind in the first two sets and, in the final one, found firmer footing. Scores were 26-24; 25-23; 22-25; and 25-16.
Dark Horse coach Jennifer Miller said she was pleased with the way her varsity girls played Thursday.
“Anytime you can play from behind and win, you’ve done a good job. That’s what the girls did today. We were behind in both the first and second (sets) but were kept plugging away until we could pull ahead and get the wins. I applaud their efforts.”
Miller tipped her hat to teammates Peyton Miller and Tori Tyndall who, she said, lead the team in kills Thursday night.
The outside hitters, the coach said, played well throughout the game.
“I was pleased with the way the team played tonight, especially coming from behind to win at this point in the season. I don’t think they could have done that at this point last year.”
The younger Clinton girls, playing for the third time this week, fell apart, Miller said, towards the end of the match.
“It’s really hard to stayed focused and react like you should when you’ve played that much early in the season. The games were pretty close to begin with, but in the end we kind of fell apart; we couldn’t close it out.”
The JV fell 20-25; 25-23; 10-25.
The Clinton girls travel to Midway Monday, Aug. 20 to face the Lady Raiders.
The JV and varsity Horses are 2-1.
Calls to Union head coach Randi K. McMillian were not immediately returned Thursday evening.
