After the Duplin-Sampson American Legion and Wilmington Post #10 match-up Friday evening was called due to inclement weather, the two teams met again for a double-header Saturday and one last game Sunday, leaving the American Legion ranked second in the region after Post #10 swept them in a best-out-of-five series.
According to reports from sideline mother Abigail Raynor, the American Legion team traveled to Wilmington Saturday, July 18, to finish the Friday night game against Post #10.
The team’s first game was slated for 5 p.m. and American Legion saw their first loss with the score 14-9. Another game against Post #10 immediately followed, handing American Legion another loss of 13-3.
The teams met up again Sunday, July 19, and the American Legion received the final loss in the best-of-five series with the score 12-2.
They ended second in the region.
With a second ranking in the region, the American Legion team qualified for the state tournament slated for July 24-29 at East Carolina University.
According to NCPreps.com message board administrator Don Hines, the state tournament will kick off July 24 with a banquet and orientation.
The first series of games will start Saturday, July 25, at 9:30 a.m. with Shelby taking on Post #10; game two is slated for 12:30 p.m. with Duplin-Sampson taking on the winner of the Rowan County and Mooresville match-up, which was played Monday night; the 4:30 p.m. game (game three) will be either Rock Mount or Cary against the number two seed from the Rowan County and Mooresville match-up; and the final game (game four) will be at 7:30 p.m. with Cherryville taking on Pitt County Post #3.
As for Sunday’s lineup, game five will start at 9:30 a.m. with the losers of games one and three matching up; game six at 12:30 p.m. will have the loser of game two taking on the loser of game four; game seven at 4:30 p.m. will be the winners of games one and three competing; and game eight at 7:30 p.m. is slated to be the winners of games two and four.
