KENANSVILLE — The Duplin County school officials say they are pleased with the preliminary Adequate Yearly Progress results, which show that 11 of the county’s 16 schools met the AYP goals.

“We are extremely pleased that 11 of 16 of our schools made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for the 2008-09 school year,” said superintendent Dr. Wiley Doby. “AYP is something that is always difficult to obtain. Although our goal is always for all schools to make AYP, we feel extremely good that about 70 percent of our schools made it. This shows that the teachers, principals, staff, parents and students are working not only extremely hard but very efficiently. My hat goes off to them and I am extremely appreciative of their efforts and dedication.”

Assistant superintendent Bo Mullins shared that the county met 52 of 54 target goals for the entire school system, which, he said, is quite an accomplishment. He added that the scores would not be made official until the state Board of Education meets to approve the results.

The following schools made AYP with the target goals set for each individual school: Charity Middle, met 25/25; Chinquapin Elementary, met 17/17; Warsaw Elementary, met 21/21; E. E. Smith Middle, met 25/25; Kenansville Elementary, met 17/17; North Duplin Elementary, met 21/21; North Duplin Junior-Senoir High, met 25/25; Rose Hill-Magnolia Elementary, met 21/21; Wallace Elementary, met 25/25; James Kenan School of Engineering, met 8/8 and B. F. Grady also made AYP but goal numbers were unavailable.

Schools that did not meet AYP were: Beulaville Elementary, met 28/29; East Duplin High, met 10/13; James Kenan, met 8/11; Wallace-Rose Hill High, met 9/13 and Warsaw Middle, met 12/19.

The target/goals set for each school depends upon the sub-groups within each individual school, according to AYP guidelines, and that is why some schools are required to meet more goals than others.

School adminstrators said they are hoping that the trend for improvement will continue this year as the new school year will begin another evaluation of accountability for everyone in the system.
